A history lesson wrapped in a bunch of fun that will break through the barrier of education vs games. This has old school Microsoft all over it. However after playing a bit of the campaign, the game feels great, the game looks great, and while “basic”, which might not quite be the right term, I can absolutely see this as a killer edition that the player I was when I played AOE would have loved. And went into it with lower expectations given what I had seen in previews. I also wanted the next level age of empires, 2021 edition. A couple YouTube and twitch videos come out of the weekly tournaments too. There’s a discord that you can get a pre alpha key in, which will carry through into alpha and beta, if you reach a certain level of total activity in the server. I will now formally plug IMMORTAL: Gates of Pyre.

Specifically I know SunSpear’s game Immortal is planned to be free to play and cosmetic supported, which means it could also benefit from the “hmm this looks worth a download” effect the way AOE4 does with game pass. Similar feeling games but with ambitious vision and fresh support. With Blizzard leaving SC2 more and more to fight for its own survival, not that it’s struggling too bad atm, I’m hopeful for what FrostGiant and SunSpear will eventually put out. AOE4 is accessible and popular and if people enjoy it well enough to see another new rts title in the future and say “hell I might enjoy that”, I think that’s a good thing. It’s really hard to learn an rts passively the way you might an fps and I think that makes it hard to get in to. AOE4 is simple and given that, I think highly overpriced, but that simplicity makes it an easier introduction to what can be a very stressful and complex genre. My friend has played near zero rts, but seemed to enjoy what he played reasonably well. I am a huge rts player, but the game holds almost no appeal to me. It was actually just last night a friend of mine tried AOE4. It's quite unique to have stone walls that require extra planning to take down, as opposed to just being a wooden wall with more hitpoints. I'd also argue that the siege mechanics have not been done this way in a game before, except maybe for the Stronghold series. Whereas in AOE4, the Mongols are wildly different and require a different style of play. The Mongols in AOE2 play functionally the same as the English, except for a few bonuses and a unique unit. Almost all the factions in AoE2 play similarly (barring the South Native American factions). The factions are also quite different from one another. The voice lines become increasingly more "modern" as you advance, and the music becomes more complex and nuanced (with more instruments, etc.)

There are a lot of details in the game, especially in the playable faction design, that just doesn't exist in any other AOE game, or even most other RTS games.įor example: Each faction has its own language, and soundtrack, that evolves as you progress through the various ages. I'm not sure if I agree with the "achieves nothing in terms of game design" comment. I was curious to play it but I never got to formulate my own opinion playing it sadly. I myself didn't get DoW3 because it was poorly optimized and my computer was too weak to play it at the time. Notably the glory kills (That didn't bother me personally, they're honestly more annoying RNG for competitive play, but then again DoW was never really a top-notch competitive game.) The problem was that the game had a plethora of issues on launch which were slow to be addressed (Hero imbalances, optimization issues, I believe there was strategy stagnancy due to map design, lack of map variety.) while lacking certain features people considered 'iconic' to dawn of war. What I did see were just as many players (and content creators) defending the changes as there were people outcrying it. I don't believe Dawn of War 3 failed entirely due to the player backlash, though I never got to play it so what I know is circumstantial. I know i'm 2 months late but I really wanted to reply to this one.
